If your skin suddenly starts feeling tighter, rougher or less radiant as the weather gets colder, you’re definitely not imagining it.
Winter can be tough on our skin. Between colder temperatures outside, wind, central heating and moving constantly between warm indoor spaces and chilly Dublin weather, skin can lose moisture more quickly and start to look noticeably different.
For many people, the first signs are subtle: make-up doesn’t sit quite as well, fine lines seem more noticeable, skin feels tight after cleansing or that healthy summer glow simply seems to have disappeared.
The good news? A few changes to your skincare routine — and the right professional treatment — can make a real difference.
How can you tell if your skin is dehydrated?
Dry and dehydrated skin aren’t always the same thing.
Dry skin generally produces less natural oil, whereas dehydrated skin is lacking water. That means even someone who normally has combination or oily skin can experience dehydration during the winter.
Some of the most common signs include:
- Skin feeling tight, particularly after cleansing
- A rough or slightly flaky texture
- Dull or tired-looking skin
- Fine lines appearing more noticeable
- Make-up settling into lines or looking patchy
- Skin feeling less plump than usual
- Increased sensitivity
If several of these sound familiar, your skin may simply need a little more support through the colder months.
Why does winter make the problem worse?
Cold air tends to contain less moisture, while central heating creates a warm but dry indoor environment.
The result can be a bit of a double hit for your skin.
At the same time, habits change during winter. We take hotter showers, spend more time indoors and sometimes continue using the same cleansers, exfoliants and lightweight moisturisers that worked perfectly well during summer.
Your skincare routine doesn’t necessarily need a complete overhaul — but it may need to adapt.
What can you do at home?
Start with the basics.
Use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight. Introduce a richer moisturiser if your skin needs it and avoid over-exfoliating in an attempt to remove flaky skin.
And yes, SPF still matters in an Irish winter. UVA exposure doesn’t disappear just because it’s cloudy or cold, so daily sun protection should remain part of your routine.
Most importantly, listen to your skin. If something that normally works starts causing irritation, reduce how frequently you’re using it rather than simply applying more products.
Which professional treatments can help?
At Dublin Skin and Laser Clinic, we always recommend choosing a treatment based on your skin rather than simply booking whichever facial happens to be trending.
For winter dehydration and dullness, some of the treatments we may recommend include:
Hydraderm Facial
Our Hydraderm Facial combines deep cleansing, microdermabrasion, hydrodermabrasion and an oxygen/hyaluronic infusion, followed by LED light therapy selected for your skin.
It’s an excellent option when the goal is fresher, smoother and more hydrated-looking skin.
Dermaplaning
Sometimes dullness is partly caused by a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.
Dermaplaning gently removes dead surface cells and fine vellus hair, leaving the skin feeling exceptionally smooth. It can be particularly appealing before an event or when you want make-up to sit beautifully.
Image Skin Peels
A professionally selected skin peel can help improve dull, rough or uneven-looking skin by encouraging exfoliation and skin renewal.
The important word here is selected.
Different skins need different approaches, particularly during winter when the skin barrier may already be under additional stress. That’s why we tailor our peels to the individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
What about fine lines?
One of the interesting things about winter skin is that dehydration can make existing fine lines appear more obvious.
That doesn’t necessarily mean your skin has suddenly aged over the course of a few weeks.
Restoring hydration can improve the appearance of the skin, while treatments such as microneedling or RF microneedling may be considered where the goal is longer-term improvement in texture, firmness or fine lines.
The right option depends entirely on your skin and what you’re hoping to achieve.
Our best advice? Don’t wait until your skin feels uncomfortable
You don’t need to completely change your skincare routine every November.
But winter is a good time to reassess what your skin needs.
A professional skin consultation can help identify whether you’re dealing with dehydration, dryness, sensitivity, pigmentation or another concern — and help you avoid spending money on products or treatments that aren’t right for your skin.
At Dublin Skin and Laser Clinic, we’ll assess your skin, talk through your concerns and recommend a treatment plan that’s appropriate for you.
